Meet Bernie Lee
National Volunteer Week
For Bernie, Mondays start early but they’re something he genuinely looks forward to. Since 2014, not long after the passing of his wife, Bernie has been a familiar and welcoming presence at Ozanam House. What began as a way to stay active and connected has grown into something much more meaningful: a weekly ritual filled with purpose, people, and quiet joy.
Each Monday, Bernie joins the team in the kitchen, preparing and serving meals with care and consistency. It’s not just about the food, it’s about showing up, sharing moments, and being part of a community that looks out for one another. Over the years, he’s formed strong bonds with both volunteers and visitors, describing the camaraderie as something truly special. “I feel blessed to be part of the Monday team,” he reflects, appreciating the compassion and dedication that surrounds him each week.
Bernie’s motivation is simple yet powerful: helping those less fortunate brings him genuine happiness. Inspired by a friend who volunteered for over two decades, he stepped into the role with an open heart and discovered just how rewarding it could be. What surprised him most was the sense of fulfilment it brought, something he hadn’t fully expected but now cherishes deeply.
Ask Bernie about standout moments, and he won’t point to just one. For him, every Monday holds value. Every interaction, every shared smile, every small act of kindness adds up to something bigger.
His advice to others is heartfelt and honest: volunteering isn’t just about giving it’s about what you receive in return. And for Bernie, that return is a sense of belonging, purpose, and quiet joy that keeps him coming back, week after week.
