Meet Sue McCarthy

National Volunteer Week

For Sue McCarthy, volunteering at Ozanam House has never been just about giving her time. It’s been about finding connection, joy, and a sense of belonging. For the past eight years, Sue has been part of the Ozanam House community, quietly making a difference in ways that matter.

Her journey began simply, serving breakfast once a week at the old centre. Over time, she moved into the dining room, getting to know people, sharing small conversations, and becoming a familiar, friendly face. These days, Sue brings the room to life in a different way running the weekly bingo sessions that so many look forward to.

There’s something special about the way Sue talks about bingo. It’s not just a game it’s laughter, excitement, and the joy of seeing people come together. She loves handing out prizes, but more than that, she loves seeing people return each week, ready to have fun and be part of something. That sense of community is what makes it all worthwhile.

What started to help others has also been a journey of personal growth for Sue. Once someone who found it difficult to speak to others, she has gradually come out of her shell. Through volunteering, she has built confidence, found her voice, and discovered how powerful a simple conversation can be.

But perhaps the most meaningful part of Sue’s experience is the connection she shares with the residents. The support and kindness she receives in return remind her that volunteering is never one-sided it’s a shared experience that enriches everyone involved.

Ask Sue why she keeps coming back, and the answer is easy: she loves what she does. And if someone is thinking about volunteering, she doesn’t overcomplicate it she simply says, “just do it,” because the rewards are greater than you could ever expect.
