Newman College Students – Sharing Joy Through Music

A heartfelt thank you from all of us at Ozanam House

Every time the students from Newman College walk through our doors, instruments in hand and smiles on their faces, they bring more than just music – they bring connection, warmth and a sense of belonging. Through their performances, they’ve become a vibrant part of the Ozanam House community, reminding us all of the power of joy in unexpected places.

For these students, volunteering through music is a way of being part of something larger than themselves. Whether they’re strumming a guitar, singing a familiar tune or encouraging the room to dance, their presence helps build bridges between worlds that may otherwise never meet. “Music breaks down barriers,” one student shared. “It softens differences and reminds us that we’re all human.”

It’s in the small, spontaneous moments that their impact truly shines. Like the time the room erupted into dancing during “The Nutbush” – residents and students laughing side by side, clapping in time, swept up in shared celebration. Or the woman who brought a toy microphone to lead a joyful chorus of ABBA songs, transforming an ordinary afternoon into something extraordinary. These are the memories that linger – moments of connection that speak louder than words ever could.

They mentioned that volunteering at Ozanam House leaves a lasting imprint on the students, opening their eyes to realities they may not have encountered before. They feel they return to Newman College changed: more grounded in their values, more empathetic and more aware of the world around them. “It’s not just what we give,” one student reflected, “but what we learn — about humility, resilience, and shared humanity.”
